Week 14 Blog

Chapter 8 - Developing Emotional Intelligence

This week in class we discussed emotional intelligence at work, at home and at school. We also talked about creating "flow" in our lives. Please answer the following questions based on what you have learned this week.
  1. Write about a specific past event when you experienced flow in any part of your life.
  2. Describe your perfect work of the future, the kind that you believe will create the most flow in your life.

2. How can you use your emotions as a compass to stay on course to a rich, fulfilling life?

Chapter 7 - Adapting Lifelong Learning

Now that you know how the human brain works best & more importantly how YOU learn best, all of your future learning shouldn't be a problem! Discuss the following in this week's blog.

  • What is your preferred way of learning?
  • What can you do when your instructor doesn't teach the way that you prefer to learn?
  • Give a specific example of a time that you learned something just for the "love" of learning it?

Great job with the study skills assignment we worked on in class this week! I hope you found at least a few new strategies that will help you in the future. For your blog this week, please answer the following questions. Please post your blog by Friday...I know I am posting it a little late this week so I will cut everyone some slack on the time it takes for you to respond. Please post by Friday evening if possible...so that you don't have to worry about it this weekend!

1. From the suggestions in class this week, which new study strategy will you try at least once this semester? Why do you think this strategy might work for you?

2. Do any of the study strategies that were suggested not work for you? Please explain why. Have you tried this idea before and it didn't work?

Week 10 Blog

Chapter 6

In Chapter 6 we discussed how to gain Self-Awareness of our "good" and "bad" habits we have which can lead to our successes, or that can lead us "off course."

Now is the perfect time in the semester to identify and revise the inner obstacles to your success. This week we learned how to "Eat a Whale" and actually achieve our goals by thinking BIG and taking small, purposeful steps.

Your assignment:
  • Discuss what habit patterns in your life get you off course.
  • How did these habit patterns develop?
  • List 4-5 steps you can take TODAY or within the next week to change these habit patterns.

Case Study: Strange Choices

In this week's class we read the Case Study for Chapter 6, Strange Choices. The choices that the students made in each scenario might appear a little strange to someone else. For this week's blog, think about a choice you have made that appeared strange to someone else-perhaps your parents or your friends that didn't agree with or understand what you were choosing. Explain why you made this choice. What made you decide to make this choice that might seem strange to others? Don't forget to dive deep and explore what really caused your choice.

Read Case Study: Professor Rogers' Trial (p. 121 in your book) and then answer the following questions.

1. Decide which character was most responsible for the group's grade of a "D." Explain why you think this character is the most responsible.

2. Imagine that the character you decided was most responsible for the poor grade in the case study is now part of a group project for one of your classes here at CMC. How would you deal with this group member? If you had decided that Professor Rogers was the most
responsible, explain how you would deal with both a difficult group member and an instructor who appears to grade group work unfairly.

Week 6 Blog

Chapter 4 - Mastering Self Management

In this chapter, we discussed how to:
  • Act with purpose - choosing things that move us forward towards our goals
  • Employ self management tools - planning and carrying out purposeful actions
  • Developing self discipline - showing commitment, focus and persistence in pursuing our goals and dreams.

This week's blog is all about how you can do the things listed above to achieve your goals. Please respond in at least a paragraph to the following questions.

  1. Write system about the (or lack of system) that you presently use to decide what you will do each day. There is no "wrong" answer. Consider things like: How do you know what homework to do? When to study for tests? What classes to attend?
  2. Write about how you could use or adapt one of the self management tools in this chapter to improve your outcomes or experiences. **If you do not want to use any of these tools, explain why.

Think about one of your biggest dreams. It can be the one from the "Guess My Dream" activity in class this week or another dream you have. Now it is time to take action to achieve your dream. For your blog this week, please answer the following questions. Don't forget to "dive deep" and really explain why and how you are going to achieve this dream.
1. Briefly describe your dream. Why is it important to you?
2. Describe your plan of action to achieve this dream.
3. What are you doing now to start achieving your dream? (e.g. I am going to college to get my degree, I am spending my money and time wisely to have options for the future)
