In Chapter 6 we discussed how to gain Self-Awareness of our "good" and "bad" habits we have which can lead to our successes, or that can lead us "off course."
Now is the perfect time in the semester to identify and revise the inner obstacles to your success. This week we learned how to "Eat a Whale" and actually achieve our goals by thinking BIG and taking small, purposeful steps.
Your assignment:
- Discuss what habit patterns in your life get you off course.
- How did these habit patterns develop?
- List 4-5 steps you can take TODAY or within the next week to change these habit patterns.
This blog is due by Monday, November 3rd at 5pm (due to the blogger.com error) Have a safe and fun Halloween!

I have many habit patterns that get me off track but there's a set of some that consistenly hinder me from getting back on course. Number one, I manage my time poorly. I work too hard on schoolwork, taking more time and having no time for anything else. Then I procrastinate, try to have fun, and still have trouble with schoolwork. While I get all my homework done when I just focus on it and nothing else, there is still no consistent balance.
Number two, I do not set goals very well. There are a couple of books that I've been wanting to read for a long time that I'll start and never finish. I have struggles with reading but I never push myself to get towards that satisfying conclusion of the end of those books. I also do not exercise regularly or as much I need to. I have had spurts over the past couple summers when I've exercised regularly and been in good shape. Then when school started these past two years, I went right back to being inactive. This is due to being not able to set goals very well and not being able to manage my time well.
These patterns developed from my own laziness and also being just a little "slower" than most. These patterns though, are not ones that cannot be achieved.
So, for the set goals goal, there are some steps that can help me. First of all, I can find a book I want to read and commit to reading it 4 days a week, reading twenty pages a day. Second of all, to exercise regularly, I could set some time aside, 30-45 minutes to exercise. If I have no time to do one activity, I could have a list of other things I could do to exercise. Third of all, I could break things in to chunks. Set aside a certain amount of time for homework and fun. Fourth of all, to help me manage my time, I could choose to be healthy, eat well, and do a little exercise when I set aside time for breaks. By taking care of myself mentally and physically, I could have more energy to be focused. By being focused, I could have time to make all my time managed, well-managed indeed.
An academic bad habit pattern that I notice myself doing is kind of putting things off til the last minute or just deciding to do them later. A great example is for this class. I know when the blog and email assignments are due for this class, yet I have trouble getting around to doing them on time. Ill remember Thursday afternoon, but decided to do it that night, and then end up forgetting until Friday night after it's supposed to be posted. I procrastinate a lot and it doesn't always go well.
Throughout my life I have procrastinated, but I feel it a little more strongly in college. College is a choice and it feels a lot different than high school and going to college in the same town just has some weird effect on me. I think it has something to do with my college schedule being more flexible and I tend to slack on things.
One positive thing I have noticed though is that I still always attend class and have only missed one class all semester. Eventhough it is a choice, I still feel I have the responsibility to show up. I need to be more commited to my work to make sure I get it done on time. This is something I will definitley want to work on because with the ski season coming it will be even more difficult to keep concentrated. If I can instill the habit to not procrastinate now, I will find much more success in the months to come.

there are many things that set me off track in my life. One thing in my life that distracts me from my goals is procrastination. I set everything to the day its due and i feel that i developed early in middle school because I did it all the time. Something i can do to stop this is just stop procastinating and get used to not procastinating.
There are a few things that set me off track, one thing is that I sometimes cant motivate myself to do some research for my homework, so I wait till the last minute and for example if I do research for a speech, the speech is not as good as it could be.
What I can do against it? Just motivate myself to do it early enough...like saying myself: "If you do it now, its done and your speech will be a lot better".

I really don't have any bad habbits that get me off course. I always strive to get my school work done and its always been that way. I remember that I use to be like that kid that never did anything and could care less. So I suppose I'm better now. I always find a way to manage time so that I can fit enough stuff in while still being able to have a little fun. Leaving things to the last minute is not something I like to do. I love being able to have a giant project due the next day, yet I finished it a week ago. Gives me time to go back and look over it if anything is not spelled right or if some equation doesn't add up.
Instead of writing steps of things I need to do i'm going to put down steps to keep myself in the game.
1. I'm setting a goal to keep myself staying on track for the next 5-6 years of my college education. 2. I'm going organize myself a little better rather than depending on everything writin down in my memory. 3. I'm going to keep everything down to a moderation. Party a few times during the seasons and plan ahead too. For example, I'll go party on the 21st of november and not the weekend before that because I have a paper due in english and a speech.
Sorry it took a while to post this up.
I'f I'm not motivated to something that I have to do, I have a hard time trying to get to those things. Leaving me off track and making it harder to do what I have to do.
Also leaving everything until the last minute, procrastinating, that's when the whale itself eats me alive. Not having any chance to do better in what I was supposed to do, so instead I end up wit a mediocre work, which is not good. And then the worst part is that I feel bad about myself when I have to turn out something that I was sure I could have been something better.
All of these patterns are natural for people, and since they are natural, people can overcome it. Just by working one step at a time.
Some of the solutions for these bad-patterns are:
Make some time for your chores and homework in between your fun activities.
Don't leave everything until the last minute, whatever you are doing.
Try to motivate yourself, if you don't like something, get it over with and you are going to feel better after and you'll become more motivated.
Put all your best in everything that you do.
Discuss what habit patterns in your life get you off course.
Some habbit patterns i have gotten into that get me off track is that i procrastinate a lot.
How did these habit patterns develop?
I think they developed becuase i wanted to hang out with my friends more than i wanted to do homework and i just figured i would do my homework later, which worked for me until i got into my third year in high school and college where there is a lot more work to be done and you cant have that kind of attitude but im so used to it now.
List 4-5 steps you can take TODAY or within the next week to change these habit patterns.
1. Tell my friends that i have to do homework and that i cant hang out with them.
2. Do my homework right after class so at night i can hang with my friends.
3. Be more commited to doing my homework know that there is consequences if i dont do it.
4. Do my best at all the homework i do so if i do forget one assignment it wont hurt my grade too much

I have a habit of begin to neat and organized, I know that sounds weird but It really slows me down when I have to get work done. I have dyslexia so when I was little they taught me to be very organized so that I would not mess up as much in school. Over the years I became more and more organized to the point where it would bother me if my work was not organized and neat. Some times I would have to re Wright all my work just because I did like the way it looked.
1. I can not re Wright my work even if I think it looks bad.
2. I can try not caring about how my work comes out.
3. I can type my work so I know it will look good.
4. I can cut off my eraser so that I can not erase every time I think my work looks bad

in my life there are many things that can get me off course one that is easily remedied would have to be that when I don’t take any time for myself I get burnt out on whatever I’m doing in life.
this pattern has pretty much been with me my whole life and more than likely developed as a sub-conscious defense mechanism to keep myself getting to far into anything and leaving a back door to escape from.
There are many things that I can do to help myself fix this particular habit such as
1. Making sure that I take time off for myself such as to go rock climbing.
2. Making sure that I make time to eat because if I don’t then I get extremely moody.
3. Balance the amount of time that I spend on homework with how much time I take to do other things.
4. Make sure that I get at least six to eight hours of sleep each night which helps me to stay collected mentally.
5. Keep my caffeine consumptions at a normal and steady level to avoid changes in my mood.

A pattern in my life that directs me off track is my habit of procrastination. It interfers with every part of my life, but mostly messes me up in my school work. I put things off until the very last minute which is a very bad thing. This is beacause if things dont go as planned, I don't have time to fix things or even improvise. These habits formed many, many years ago. I can't tell you exactly how long ago but I couold imagine around the age of 5. Thats about the age I started school which would be the perfect palce for me to acquire this horrible trait.
Steps to change this
1) Punish myself when I do this.
2) Set up a schedule of my work and STICK TO IT!
3) Do things right away; homework, work, play, so i dont even have a chance to do it later.
4) Write EVERYTHING down so I remember in advance and can get it done in advance.
5) Look at sylabus so i have a heads up before things are even assigned.
